Greens MLA Laura Nuttall will this week move a motion calling on the ACT Labor government to stand up to their federal counterparts’ cuts to the NDIS, and to ensure foundational supports are fully funded.
“Federal Labor’s $37 billion cuts to the NDIS have already had a devastating impact on the community”, said Miss Nuttall MLA.
“Hundreds of thousands of people are left wondering if they will be one of the one in three who will lose their place on the scheme in the coming years, and if they will have any alternative supports in place.
“The community’s been told that foundational supports will replace the supports being cut from their NDIS plans, but in the ACT, they are nowhere near operational.
“While some work is being done on Thriving Kids, there's been no indication of what foundational supports will be available for adults with a disability and children who don't come under Thriving Kids. It’s frankly terrifying for the community.
“That’s why my motion tomorrow calls on ACT Labor ministers to stand up where their federal counterparts have failed to do so.
“At the bare minimum they must publicly oppose absolutely any changes to the NDIS until there are sufficient foundational supports funded, operational and embedded in the community.
“My motion further calls on ACT ministers to publicly oppose proposed legislation which would allow the federal NDIS Minister to unilaterally make cuts to funding without state or territory approval.
Ms Nuttall’s motion will be debated on Wednesday afternoon.
“Federal Labor has failed the disability community across Canberra and Australia. By supporting these calls and putting substantial funding into foundational supports in the upcoming budget, ACT Labor can take a small step in the right direction.”
